Greer Kirshenbaum- Neuroscientist, Ph.D

The first step of emotional intelligence is awareness
— Greer Kirshenbaum

Greer Kirshenbaum is the very first Neuroscientist Doula, with a PhD in Neuroscience and Medical Science. For over 15 years she has been studying how genetics and experience shape the emotional brain and influence lifelong mental and physical health. Helping families understand how caregivers can boost success, thriving and flourishing and diminish poor health, depression, anxiety and addiction in adulthood by shaping babies’ brains through simple intuitive enriching experiences in pregnancy, birth and infancy.

In this video, Greer and I shed light on:

  • How to interact with your child’s emotions to ensure brain safety & development

  • The Emotional Brain

  • Neurotransmitter System

  • Gut Health and the Brain

  • How interacting with a child’s emotions is the key to healthy brain development later on in life

  • How the Limbic/HPA Axis is called upon when we relate to other people, trusting others, seeking approval from others, our stress system and our response

  • The Neurotransmitter system, dopamine, epinephrine, and our reward center. Understanding addictions and habits that don’t serve us

  • GUT health- how we have mini-brains in our gut and loads of serotonin systems are operating there! The health of our gut is directly related to our emotional brain

  • In order to raise children to have healthy emotional brains, we must be an EMOTION COACH for them by being regulated and present!

  • We are in a mental health crisis right now – because so many children’s emotional worlds have been shut down over the years and they are not always allowed to feel emotions

  • What does emotional support look like? Parent must get out of the emotional brain!

  • Anything that is experienced repeatedly – can change the brain, positive or negative! This is KEY. WE ALL HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHANGE!

“None of us are perfect, but we want to aim at being present with our children’s emotions and coach them through the big emotions together… as many times as we remember”

“It is  your presence that will emotionally regulate your child”

“You can have all the theory in the world, but if you are not embodying it, it will not translate”

“There is no such thing as good emotions or bad emotions, they are all emotions”

“Developing deep and meaningful connections with other people is the purpose of life.”

Hi there! I just want to say thank you for this video and for bringing light to these topics. As a trauma-informed student of occupational therapy, I have looked to Dr. Nadine Burke-Harris (MD) and Dr. Bruce Perry (Neuropysch) to increase my knowledge about the brain pathways that are created to set the stage for our emotional wellbeing. I want to say that every single one of our professions are on the same page. In occupational therapy – Particularly when working in a mental health setting or anytime we are addressing any type of psychosocial factor on an individuals occupational performance- we start with self-awareness and follow with developing regulation skills. I’d love to chat more with you both in the future to share strengths of each of our fields to help fill the world with more emotionally regulated adults that create emotionally regulated children ?
