5 Foods to Eat to Feel Healthier
Jan 02, 2023For me, spring is all about resetting and cleansing my body. As the weather warms, my body is eager to shake off the heaviness of winter and is craving more lightness and radiance. One of the best ways to feel lighter is to remove toxins from the body and optimize digestion. Here are some things that I eat to feel lighter and healthier in the springtime:
Green leafy vegetables
Greens are the ultimate superfood! They are rich in nutrients such as vitamin C, K, and magnesium and are chock full of antioxidants. Their high fiber content helps to improve digestion and aids in the removal of toxins from the body. Certain compounds found in greens such as glucosinates also support detoxification and liver health. I make sure to eat at least one type of green leafy vegetable every day. For example, I’ll throw some spinach into my smoothies or make a big arugula salad for lunch. Delicious and healthy!
Fresh herbs
Fresh herbs remind me of summer! They are so delicious and can add a punch of flavor to your food. Herbs are also incredibly healthy. Cilantro, parsley, dandelion, and nettle are some of the best herbs to consume to support your liver and body’s natural detoxification processes. I like to throw some fresh herbs into everything I cook to add a little more nutrition and flavor!
Lemon water
Lemon water is made by mixing some freshly squeezed lemon juice into the water. This simple beverage has a myriad of health benefits. Lemon water helps your body detox by supporting liver and kidney function. The acidity from the juice helps to stimulate and improve your digestion. This can help to reduce bloating, keep you more regular and aid in the removal of toxins from your body. Lemon water can also help to balance your body’s pH and optimize overall health. I make sure to start off each day with a warm glass of lemon water because it is so beneficial for health. Squeezing some lemon into your water is also a great alternative to sugar-sweetened beverages and sodas.
Grapefruit
I love grapefruits. They taste sweet and sour at the same time and are so juicy and refreshing! Their bright colors and flavors are reflective of the high amount of antioxidants and phytochemicals that they contain. These compounds have been shown to have a range of health benefits such as reducing inflammation, preventing cancer, improving heart health, and much more. Grapefruits also contain pectin, which has been shown to support your liver and kidneys in removing toxins from your blood. Their high vitamin C content can help to strengthen your immune system and improve skin vitality. Despite these benefits, grapefruit can sometimes interact with certain medications. If you are taking medications, it is important to do your research or talk to your doctor about possible drug interactions.
Fermented foods
Fermented foods contain a type of beneficial bacteria called probiotics. Consuming a diet rich in probiotics can help to improve digestion and gut health. Fermentation also improves the nutritional content of food and makes nutrients more bioavailable to the human body. Most importantly, fermented foods are delicious. Some of my favorite fermented foods include sauerkraut, kimchi, tempeh, and natto.
