Healthy Alternatives to Sugar
White sugar is EVERYWHERE and it raises blood sugar significantly – causing that sugar spike and crash. Plus, you probably know that is it ADDICTIVE. Once you start, you can’t stop – we are all the same in this! Research has shown that refined sugar is as addictive to drugs like cocaine and nicotine!
There are many healthy alternatives to refined sugar. These alternatives actually have healing properties, and will not lead to the spike and crash that refined sugar does.
1.Coconut sugar- BEST FOR BAKING! This is the most versatile white sugar replacement! It works every time without changing the texture or taste! You can replace 1 cup of white sugar with 1 cup of coconut sugar.
2. Maple syrup/honey – Maple syrup is high in iron, and unpasteurized honey (this is the only one to use!) is anti-viral and anti-microbial. I like adding these to hot drinks, blender pancakes or moist cakes such as banana bread or carrot cake! You can replace 1 cup of white sugar with ¾ cup of maple syrup or honey.
3. Stevia- this does not raise the blood sugar at ALL but can taste a little weird, so make sure to check the ingredients for hidden additives or sugar alcohols. It’s great for oatmeal, hot drinks, energy balls, and homemade chocolate! You can replace 1 cup of white sugar with 1 tsp of stevia. A little goes a long way!
